We love our job as a fun family portrait photographer. How could we not, being invited to join a family to capture a moment in their lives is a real honour.
In June,we shared a wonderful hour with the lovely Ryan family on a fun family shoot at stunning Formby Beach and Pine Woods. As a Merseyside photographers we are familiar with taking photographs on Formby Beach with its dramatic coastline, famous sand dunes and sweeping coastal pinewoods.
It’s a favourite place for the Ryan family too, they live just 15 minutes away. The Ryan family consists of Dad Ged, Mum Nicola, and daughters Charlotte, Hazel and Annie. And of course, their much-loved dog.
It was a bit windy, unsurprising for a coastal location in the North Wes of England, but I made the best of the breeze by creating images that worked with the natural movement of the wind.

We took a walk through the Pine Woods and we captured the family just chatting and playing together. We found a swing so we got some fun images of everybody on it. And we had some fun poses on and jumping of a felled log. We loved that mum and dad were up for playing as much as the girls were. It was great to capture the fun these guys have together.
As parents it can be tempting to sit out of photographs and make them just about the children. But it’s important to create keepsakes for your children. When they grow up your children want to see images of you and them together, especially images of you playing and having fun. This kind of photography is very emotive as it transports adults back to their childhood, not only reminding them of how they looked, but more importantly of how they felt in that very moment.
We also took some lovely individual portrait images of all of them. The girls were great about it. Being photographed as a teenager is not always the most comfortable experience but the girls really were obliging and easy going which enabled us to get some beautiful and natural images of each of them.

We also enjoyed taking the images of the family on the bench at the top of a hill. The black and white effect gave them a really unusual and unique look. Here take a look!
What we love about shooting fun family portrait photography is that you capture families looking and acting naturally. Dressed as they would ordinarily dress, doing something they would ordinarily do. It allows me to capture really authentic images and shows the personalities and quirks of each individual family group. And hopefully allows us to create images that my families are thrilled with.
